Company overview
Opera San José is a professional opera company located in the heart of Silicon Valley. It is unique in the United States for its resident company of principal artists. The company presents four mainstage productions annually at the historic California Theatre in San José. In addition to their mainstage shows, they also have a state-of-the-art digital media studio to produce and broadcast fullyproduced productions. Opera San José focuses on developing and showcasing emerging artists and providing educational programs for the community.
The challenge
For Opera San José, in-venue WiFi was once just a background utility— present, but untapped as a tool to connect with the audience. Under the leadership of General Director & CEO Shawna Lucey, that quickly changed with an innovative idea: transform passive spectators into active participants.
Shawna envisioned moving beyond the traditional one-way performance to a genuine two-way dialogue. She wanted to understand patrons not only as attendees but as individuals—with distinct preferences and interests. Her groundbreaking concept was to stage a live, in-performance survey that allowed the audience to collectively choose the ending of a classic opera. This bold experiment turned a traditionally passive viewing experience into an interactive, immersive event where the audience gained real agency in the artistic creation.
To make this vision possible, Shawna recognized the need for a sophisticated technological solution—one capable of capturing and processing audience input in real time while seamlessly integrating it into the unfolding narrative of the performance.
The solution
Shawna recognized the immense potential of the in-venue WiFi beyond simple connectivity. To transform this vision into a tangible reality, Opera San José strategically partnered with Cloud4Wi. The core objective was to evolve their existing Ruckus Network-based WiFi infrastructure from a basic amenity into a dynamic and powerful patron engagement tool.
This ambitious goal was successfully achieved by creating a user-friendly, interactive, and deeply engaging digital experience for every patron. The revamped WiFi system served as a sophisticated platform for real-time data collection and patron engagement. Upon successfully logging into the network, patrons automatically received a personalized email containing a direct link to a survey, which was specifically designed to be completed during the intermission. To ensure maximum accessibility and participation, Opera San José provided a vital alternative: dedicated tablets. This multiplatform approach ensured that every patron, regardless of whether they used a smartphone or preferred a physical interaction point, could easily cast their vote during the intermission, guaranteeing that the concept of “participatory democracy” was accessible to the entire audience.
The call to action was promoted through a multi-channel strategy, with advertisements displayed during the WiFi onboarding and actively promoted directly by staff throughout the venue. This meticulously streamlined approach not only guaranteed a high-quality, seamless user experience but also proved incredibly effective for gathering valuable insights directly from the audience.
The results of this real-time audience poll were swiftly tabulated, and the cast was promptly notified of the chosen ending before the commencement of Act 2, creating a truly unique and interactive theatrical experience.
Technology and Mozart might sound like an unlikely duo, but with Cloud4Wi, they’re in perfect harmony. We’ve launched a new age of enlightenment: our audiences aren’t just watching opera—they’re shaping it.

The Results
The innovative solution was launched during the performance run of Così fan tutte from September 14 to September 28. This was a way to honor Mozart, who loved to keep his audiences guessing, by giving patrons the power to decide who ends up with whom. Shawna believed that with Cloud4Wi, they were building a model for how technology can enrich the arts, making opera more accessible, engaging, and interactive than ever before.
The results were a resounding success.
- Massive Participation: Over the course of the five-day run, 36% of patrons logged in to the in-venue WiFi network.
- High Engagement: An impressive 51% of the patrons completed the survey and participated in the live vote, proving the concept was not only innovative but also incredibly engaging for the audience.
- Data for the Future: Of the patrons who logged in to WiFi, 84% provided their consent to receive promotional communication from Opera San José, immediately fueling future marketing and fundraising campaigns.
This project was a landmark achievement, proving that technology and art could be “in perfect harmony.” Shawna noted, “For the first time, audiences don’t just watch Mozart — they shape him. It’s opera, mischief, and democracy rolled into one.”
By giving the audience a voice, Opera San José successfully created an experience that was personal, fun, and memorable. It was a model for how technology can enrich the arts, making opera more accessible and interactive than ever before.
Next steps
This was just the first time Opera San José used Cloud4Wi to create such an immersive experience. If this is what they were able to accomplish right out of the gate, there’s no telling what they’ll innovate in the future. “Opera is timeless. Cloud4Wi makes it timely,” said Shawna.
